Set was the Egyptian God of storms, thunder, chaos & hostility. He was viewed as neccessary in the scheme of things, as, for example, in his role of Lord of the deserts, where he was seen to bring rain to these arid regions.

Sometimes called "The King of the Upper Nile", Set was both the patron, and had control of, shapeshifters. He is the only other God mentioned by name in the bible, even giving his name to the Hebrew Satan.

The Egyptians revered Set for protecting Ra, the sun god, from being eaten by the forces of darkness during his nightly voyage through the underworld. He was acknowledged as the expression of individuality, seen as a negative trait within a society as rigid and codified as theirs was, where everyone worked and lived for the good of the whole.

Set was accepted as an integral part of Khemetic society, in fact, vital to it's very existence. This is due to the fact that a pharaoh's right to rule required the blessing of both Set and Horus, symbolic of the unity of the two kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt, and the duality, or balance, of nature.
